Ever wonder what the best drink recipe from Canada is? It’s the Caesar cocktail. It’s very popular in Canada, and more than 350 million are sold and consumed in the country per year. So, what is it and why is it so tasty? Well, it’s similar to a Bloody Mary, but better. (Sorry, not sorry.) It’s made with vodka, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and Caesar mix, which is a combination of tomato juice and clam broth. It’s served in a tall glass which is usually rimmed with either celery salt or Montreal steak seasoning (or both) and celery stalks and lime wedges are used for garnish.
It was invented in 1969 in Calgary, Alberta by a restaurateur by the name of Walter Chell. It was originally created to celebrate an Italian restaurant’s opening. The Caesar is also called a “Bloody Caesar”, which some think is to differentiate it from a Bloody Mary. In actuality, that name came from a British patron who tried it. He said “Walter, that’s a damn good bloody Caesar,” and the name stuck as sort of a nickname for the drink.
What’s the difference between a Caesar and a Bloody Mary? The difference is the clam broth. If you’re American, you may be a bit turned off by this. But, give it a try before you write it off entirely. Chell was inspired by dishes from Italy that combined clam with tomato sauce, and thought that that combination would make a good, Italian-inspired drink, and he was right. After all, it’s not often that a British gentleman tastes something and declares it bloody good!
Here are the best Caesar cocktails:
Classic Caesar
Most Caesar recipes either use horseradish or TABASCO sauce, but this one calls for both. The result is a spicy drink with lots of flavor. But, if you think it will be too spicy for your taste, you could do away with the horseradish and still not be disappointed.
Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
- 1 cup Clamato juice
- 2 oz. Vodka
- 1 teaspoon horseradish
- 3-4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
- 3-4 dashes TABASCO sauce (or to taste)
- 1/2 lime, juiced
- Pinch of black pepper
- Celery stalk (garnish)
Directions
- Put the celery salt on a plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass to wet it, then dip in celery salt and twist to rim it
- Add the rest of the ingredients, except the garnish, to the glass
- Stir with spoon until well combined
- Top with ice cubes
- Add garnish
- Serve

- 2-3 dashes TABASCO sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon celery salt or Montreal steak spice (to sprinkle on top)
Directions
